Transport authorities issued official orders for smoke-free transport: BRTA, BRTC and DTCA
About this phase
Round-27 set out to make all of Dhaka’s public transport compliant with the smoke-free law. The first step was to bring the authorities on board: the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) allowed DAS to use its logo on stickers, leaflets and posters (December 2020), and later ordered its field offices to have ‘No smoking’ stickers put on public transport (February 2021).
Vigilance teams were formed in the bus terminals and complaint boxes were set up there. The state bus corporation, BRTC, declared its buses smoke-free (January 2022), and the compliance monitoring report of August 2022 found that smoking in public transport had fallen from 52% to 35%.
The work went on with the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA), which declared Dhaka’s city transport smoke-free in March 2023, and with BRTC, which added tobacco control to its driver-training course module (May 2024).
